Sinking Indonesian Ferry in Jakarta, Indonesiaferrydumai
An Indonesian ferry sank Sunday in Jakarta, Indonesia. As of the latest data, Lieutenant Colonel Edwin said that rescue teams found 26 people dead while 250 survivors were already rescued, including the captain of the ferry and 12 crew members. Until now a lot more were still missing and sadly no one can tell how many were still to be found.

The ship sank about 30 minutes after huge waves hit its bow and water started seeping in, according to a report from the ship’s captain while the ferry was making an overnight journey from Pare Pare in South Sulawesi to Samarinda in East Kalimantan. The ferry left on an inter-island voyage Sunday morning and sank in stormy weather 90 minutes into the trip from Batam to Dumai in Riau, a province off Sumatra island in western Indonesia. The area is about 600 miles (900 kilometers) northwest of Jakarta.

Police and Navy officials said that the number of accounted people was more than the passengers listed which includes 228 people .Until now, number of total passengers is still unknown. The ship’s capacity is 273 but expected to surpass it since it is common for ferries to overload. This overloading may possible cause of Sinking Indonesian Ferry in Jakarta

An investigation conducted by navy and police officials is ongoing to know the reason of sinking. Overloading is one of the possible reasons that officials are considering why the ferry sank. Other considerations were if the documents needed to sail were complete, if the ferry was fit to sail, and if it is ship captain’s fault due decisions made despite the bad weather.
Today, lots of lives were taken around the world due to ferry accidents. And until now, safe-sailing rules are still not made and enforced to avoid these traumatic incidents. The authorities should hope to find ways to avoid similar accidents in the future.

There are lots of ferry ships sinking lately. Sometimes, it is the fault of the ship’s crew or management for loading too much weight on the ship which is mainly the cause of sinking. I feel sorry for the families of the victims and I want to give my deepest sympathy.
