Shiloh Pepin – Her mother called her “A tough little thing,” when doctors thought she would only live for days after her birth. Shiloh Pepin, Mermaid Girl died at Maine Medical Center Friday afternoon.

Shiloh Pepin, the little girl born with fused legs, has died at the age of 10. She had been hospitalized in critical condition for nearly a week.

Shiloh Pepin was born with “mermaid syndrome,” also known as sirenomelia, and She only had one partially working kidney, no lower colon or genital organs and her legs were fused from the waist down.

Some children with sirenomelia are able to have surgery to separate their legs, but with Shiloh Pepin’s case she was unable to have surgery due to the blood vessels crossing from side to side in her circulatory system that would have been severed. But Shiloh had received two kidney transplants and the last one was in 2007.

According to Shiloh’s mother, her daughter came down with a cold earlier this month that quickly turned to pneumonia. Shiloh rushed to Maine Medical Center on Oct. 10 and was placed on antibiotics and a ventilator.

Shiloh seemed to be doing fine for a while, but her health rapidly declined and the mermaid girl died.

Shiloh Pepin was a fifth-grader at Kennebunkport Consolidated School. “She was such a shining personality in that building,” said Maureen King, chairwoman of the board of the regional school district. Counselors will be available next week to talk to students.

Rest in Peace Shiloh Pepin.

To the parents of Shiloh Pepin,
I am deeply sadened and share your greif for the loss of such and Angel. I lost my 3 year old daughter on October 2, 2006. I know the pain you feel now is so heavy on your soul. Shiloh in her younger years reminded me of my daughter Jauslnye. When I watched Shiloh’s TV specials it made my heart feel so full of love and peace. When I learned of her passing, I felt like I lost my baby all over again. Shiloh will always have a place in my heart and will always be remembered. I know she is with our Lord Jesus, as is my baby girl. I prayed and asked my baby to play and laugh with Shiloh. Missing her is normal, wishing she were here is normal. Letting her go and be a free spirit, is the hardest thing in the world to do. I pray that you will find peace knowing how much she touch this strangers heart and soul. Remember, she is always with you….
