Sal Picinich : Cake Boss Baker Dies

Veteran baker Sal Picinich, who appeared on the reality TV series “Cake Boss,” has died in New Jersey at the age of 63. His wife, Lucille, told The Record newspaper the cause was cancer. Sal baked for 45 years in Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken, N.J., where TLC’s reality series is filmed.

Sal Picinich was born on the Croatian island of Susak. He rose to fame as one of the stars on the TLC series. He was a show regular from April 2009 till the end of that year, due to his illness. Picinich came back to the Mile Square to celebrate the bakery’s 100th anniversary, where he was awarded as “Employee of the Century” by Buddy Valastro, who called him his mentor. Valastro looked up to Picinich as a “second father.” Picinich had worked under Valastro’s late father, Buddy Valastro Sr.

Meanwhile, TLC released the following statement: “TLC was saddened to learn of the passing of Sal Picinich, a beloved Carlo’s Bakery employee featured on ‘Cake Boss.’ We join Buddy Valastro and the entire Carlo’s crew in sending Sal’s family our sincerest condolences.”

A funeral for Sal Picinich is scheduled for Feb. 4 in New Jersey. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
