A 9ft pet albino Burmese python escaped from it’s aquarium in a home with a small child; reason for a two year old being strangled in her bed. The pet python owner, Charles Jason Darnell, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, discovered the python in the bed wrapped around with the little girl. He said he grabbed a knife and stabbed the albino Burmese python, until it let go the little girl, Shaiunna Hare. By the time paramedics arrived the child was already dead.
In a 911 call, Charles Jason Darnell, cries as he tells the dispatcher, “The baby’s dead. … Our stupid snake got out in the middle of the night and strangled the baby. … She got out of the cage last night and got into the baby’s crib and strangled her to death.”
Darnell told deputies he placed the pet python kills 2 year old in a bag, which he put in an aquarium Tuesday night.
Two older children who were at home at the time were unharmed.
Darnell and Jaren Ashley Hare, Shaiunna’s mother, 23, were questioned by deputies.
According to the Officials, it’s the first documented python attack on a human in Florida.
The pet python kills 2 year old was found under furniture and alive when officers removed it from the home.
Sumter County Sheriff Bill Farmer said, “This is a very sad situation,” “To keep a large, unsecured snake in the house is just asking for trouble.”
The couple owns a second snake, a 6-foot boa constrictor.
The snakes have been confiscated and will be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine whether they should be euthanized, sheriff’s Lt. Bobby Caruthers said.
