Kenny McKinley – The Denver Broncos’ run of tragedy continues on Monday, where wide receiver Kenny McKinley was found dead in his apartment. The second-year wideout played in eight games in his rookie season with seven kick returns for 158 yards before going on injured reserve with a knee injury on Dec. 29.
While nothing has been made official, the Denver authorities are saying that Kenny McKinley,23, appears to have committed suicide. After receiving a call, police arrived at McKinley’s apartment and his body. It is believed that he died from a self-inflicted gun wound, although police are quick to point out that an investigation is ongoing.
According to Broncos president and CEO Pat Bowlen, “Everyone with the Broncos is shocked and saddened by the loss of Kenny McKinley. He was part of the Broncos’ family and will be greatly missed by our organization. My most heartfelt condolences go out to Kenny’s family and friends.”
Meanwhile, Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels added, “Kenny had a promising future on the football field, but more importantly, he was a great teammate whose smile and personality could light up the room. This is a tragic loss for our football team, and his family is in all of our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
The second-year professional was a fifth round draft pick during the 2009 NFL Draft and attended college at South Carolina. Kenny McKinely is the 10th active NFL player since 2007 to die and the second recent tragedy to befall the Broncos organization. Cornerback Darrent Williams was killed in a drive-by shooting on New Year’s Day 2007.
There are reasons why a person might do something like this. We may look at Kenny McKinley and say, why would someone so young with such a bright future do this? Yet, there are tons of reasons that may go deep into his psyche. This has been a horrendous year for former pro wrestlers and football players. Let’s hope it stops now. My condolences to the McKinley family.
