Fans from all over the world were stunned last June when Glen Campbell made the announcement that he was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The decision was not an easy one to go public with his struggle but his family felt that it was the right thing to do.
The results of his announcement could not have been anticipated instead of receding back into his mundane life the 75 year old icon has been placed back into the limelight as the music industry continues to show their love for the star.
At the CMA last November he was the main icon at the award shows which was done in tribute to him and on Sunday he will receive a lifetime Achievement trophy at the 54th Annual Grammy awards.
Behind all the pomp and pageantry both the CMAs and the Grammys have been at a standoff as each telecast vies for having the bragging rights to have Glen Campbell perform. The fact is there is really nothing like the pull of the Grammys, as he has been five time recipient of the award.
From the audience at the CMAs Campbell was clearly pleased when he heard the renditions of some of his biggest hits done by Brad Paisley, Keith Urban and Vince Gill. At the Grammys Campbell will be doing his own act when he performs “Rhinestone Cowboy,”, he will receive band support from Blake Sheldon, The Band Perry as will as his own band that includes three of this children.
This will be his first live appearance for a performance since he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
Campbell just last fall released his final album “Ghost on the Canvas,” followed by his farewell tour.
Most times Campbell will be able to complete his set with the aid of three Teleprompters located at the foot of the stage so that he can read his lines there are time however when he will flub a line which is usually laughed off. There are rare moments in which he will become a little disoriented that’s why it is so beneficial to have his family onstage to help through these episodes.
During his concerts his fans are more than happy to fill in those gaps during his senior moments following through with his lyrics until he makes his way again. His wife Kim who is at the sound board watches serenely as she knows these incidents are to be expected from time to time. Both Glen and his family has made piece with this fact.
