Facebook Addiction Disorder : Are you a Facebook addict?
October 20, 2009 | In: News

Facebook Addiction Disorder – Facebook user Nathalie Beware! I’ve read this a while ago and I would like to share this because all the signs below are true. I know someone who’s acting like this, and I think he really needs help. Proud to say that I’m not a Facebook Addict and never will be one. I’m a very busy person to add Facebook to my daily chores. But, I check them once a week or if I have my free time.
Psychologists are now probing a new kind of addiction called Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD). Psychologist Dr. Michael Fenichel, who has published numerous writings on FAD online, describes it as a situation in which Facebook usage “overtakes” daily activities like waking up, getting dressed, using the telephone, or checking e-mail.
“The amazing thing is that, like cellphones, nobody seems to notice the vast amount of time and energy – at work, at home, and now while on the move – people are devoting to Facebook. It has become a given,” Fenichel writes in an online post titled “Facebook Addiction Disorder- A New Challenge?
Facebook Addiction Disorder could be classified under the more broad “internet addiction disorder” or internet overuse.
Academic papers have already posed theories on internet addiction and social networking addiction, and even less, cellphone addiction.
“Like most activities, moderation and integration are key. Those that may seriously label and treat FAD as a behavioral addiction will clearly need to use context in determining if a behavior has become demonstrably harmful to overall social, work, or face-to-face interpersonal efficacy,” Fenichel added.
According to Joanna Lipari, a clinical psychologist at the University of California, Los Angeles who was interviewed for a CNN report, here are some signs that you are addicted to Facebook:
1. You lose sleep over Facebook. When using Facebook becomes a compulsion and you spend entire nights logged on to the site, causing you to become tired the next day.
2. You spend more than an hour a day on Facebook. Lipari said it is difficult to define how much is too much when it comes to Facebook usage, but that an average person need only spend half an hour on the site.
3. You become obsessed with old loves or exes you reconnect with on Facebook.
4. You ignore work in favor of Facebook. This means you do not do your job in order to sneak time on Facebook.
5. The thought of getting off Facebook leaves you in cold sweat. If you try going a day without Facebook and it causes you stress and anxiety, this means you need help.
According to the same report by Elizabeth Cohen, Senior CNN Medical Correspondent, Facebook addiction is not yet an actual medical diagnosis.

I don’t understand why people get so hooked up on facebook, personally….i don’t see any reason to be so addicted to it.will it pay your bills?,put food on the table?…of course not!…this is for people who have nothing better to do,…my advice to them….TRY to look for a JOB!

Well, you need to focus your attention to something else that you really enjoy like going to the gym or playing outdoor games. It will really help you out in terms of curing this kind of disorder.

I think this is a SHAM!!!!! I’m sorry, but if someone cannot get out bed, dress themselves and answer their own phone, they have something else going on, not some made-up disorder!!!!! so others can profit!!!! I am a NURSE and I LOVE facebook. How dare you say people who use Facebook need to get a JOB? that is just ridiculous! Especially when you OPEN YOUR EYES and look at all of the incredible people and what they are doing, and sharing their WORK with the world. I’m sorry, but don’t YOU have anything better to do??? then to start a bitch blog about something you don’t care for? Well, I don’t like golfing! Should i start a blog about it? and bash my friends who to? GET REAL. if you’re worried about someone, get them some proper help!!
So, are insurance companied going to cover treatment? If you need a therapist because you cannot perform simple activites of DAILY LIVING, it’s NOT FACEBOOK’s fault, or problem. i am in shock at this.
