Arnel Pineda on Oprah – As a Filipino, I am happy and proud for the success of my fellow Filipinos abroad. Just like the Filipino Singer Arnel Pineda, the Journey Band lead singer, was on Oprah Show on Monday with a theme “Don’t Stop Believing.”

Oprah’s show focuses on the individuals who make things happen despite the trials and rocking journey of their lives, and ended up in great success in their chosen path.

“He sang on the streets for food…until his YouTube video hit the Internet,” and was discovered by Neil Schon on YouTube. Same thing happened to Filipino YouTube discovery, Charice Pempengco.

Journey band lead singer, Arnel Pineda was born and raised in the Philippines. His mother raised him to love music. At a young age, he joined singing contests to raise money and improve his singing as well. At 13, his mother died due to heart disease and leaving the family in debt. He had to live with relatives and managed himself on the streets on Manila.

For about two years his life was spent out on the streets, sleeping wherever he could: in public parks, or on a narrow bench outside a friend’s crowded house. He even earned money by collecting glass bottles, newspapers, and scrap metal and selling them to recyclers. He would also go to the pier with his friends and take on odd jobs like cleaning scrap metal and docked ships. He didn’t have much to eat, sometimes he is keeping a small package of biscuit as his meal for two days. But despite all these hardships Arnel Pineda tried to remain positive about his future and keep on moving forward.

Arnel Pineda singing career started when at fifteen, he formed a band with his friends. They performed in clubs and various events. And his band eventually made it abroad where they sang in hotels and clubs in Hong Kong. One of the bands he formed was the Zoo band where he sang cover songs by Journey, Survivor, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Air Supply, The Eagles, Kenny Loggins and other popular acts from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Videos of their performances eventually made it to YouTube and that’s where Neil Schon discovered him, where at that time looking for a lead singer for Journey. And the rest of it is rock and roll history :-)
